a question of sovereignty

So, over in South Dakota they recently banned abortion, in pretty much all cases (including, as it happens, ’simple rape’, just in case you wanted to try to imagine how that would proceed). Which means that it is now illegal there to run an abortion clinic or perform abortion unless you get state permission to do it.

Cecilia Fire Thunder is the President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on Pine Ridge Reservation — yes, that’s right, where the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek took place. Cecilia is as pissed off about the new abortion laws as anyone else: but she has a novel solution:

“To me [she said] it is now a question of sovereignty…. I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”
