i promise i won’t impose this word count crap on you too often
But for now, because it’s 2.58am and I wrangled another 3000 words into place today, and tell me that’s not excuse for a little self-congratulatory calculating spree:
Thesis progress, the math version:
1. (intro) 5,500
2. 5,400
3. 7,100
4. 11,000
5. 4,000
6. 9,500
7. 6,900
8. (conclusion) 0
Total goal: 80,000
Total now: 49,400
I can so write 30,000 words between now and October 31. Moments like these, I actually believe my supervisor when she tells me I’m on track.

i have 40 000 words of the thesis written, with probably another 20 000 in fragments. i’d say i’m about a quarter way through (if i count fragments as well). I don’t really have anything like a target, but if don’t drop a chapter (or two), according to my latest outline, i am writing 8 chapters not counting the introduction, conclusion and exordium. I have met with my supervisor once to talk about the thesis, and he told me that he liked the way i was “approaching the subject”. Subsequent to this he read the original proposal and commented on the title by email. Since then we haven’t spoken about the thesis. this was while ago. So, personally i would rather you were still being killed by your thesis

meaning, seeing you move to completion, only serves to reinforce my own frustration at not being able to see and end to this thing i am meant to be be writing

Oh, don’t worry, I’m still being killed. Much sympathy, too, on unavailable supervisors and too many chapters…. It’s been a very difficult road to get to this point, and next week I’ll probably feel completely depressed again.

Congratz, Az, on reaching this point - i’m in the last twelve months of my own thesis, and it’s really INTIMIDATING to see how much work i have to put in still. but at the same time, it’s way exciting to see it’s “all coming together” and “becoming cohesive” - and i daresay perhaps you have a similar feeling.

Isn’t it really irritating how people give you extra reading/information when you’re at this point? Still, I came across this website just now (long story), and thought you might be interested in the discourse of medical tourism going on here:

Jay — congrats yourself. It’s exciting to find it being cohesive, yes, although I fear those moments are rather random and don’t stick around for long!
And Ana, healism.com is fascinating, and I could spend weeks combing through it. Except I feel the urge to go on a ‘health vacation’ coming on, and so may not be able to…. :)

I feel your pain!
I’ve got about 45,000 words of my thesis in first draft form. These cover four unfinished chapters, and my overall aim is around 100,000 words. But judging by the way things are going I could easily end up churning out a monster of Capital Vols 1, 2 and 3 proportions.
Best of luck to everyone who’s got one of these millstones hanging round their necks!

I’m wondering…does the word count really matter that much? I’ve been doing my thesis for going on three years now and I’ve never thought about the word count…just quality of content.

No, I don’t think the word count really matters. But I have targets, and the bigger it gets (and the more I know this is ‘final’ writing, not writing I’ll get rid of) the more encouraged I feel.

yeah.. i agree with Michelle. the important is the quality of the content…
